Safeguarding Officer Job Description
PURPOSE OF ROLE:
- To discharge the Association’s legal and morale obligation to exercise its duty of care and to protect all children and vulnerable adults participating in its activities and to safeguard their welfare.
PERSON SPECIFICATION:
- The following list, although not exhaustive, outlines the essential and desirable criteria required to successfully carry out this pivotal role, as Safeguarding Officer, and the full range of duties and responsibilities, set out in the role description.
- To be a person of senior status, appointed as SCGBA Safeguarding Officer, to whom Members of any of the Association’s Member Clubs can address concerns with confidence.
- To have some practical experience in networking and accessing contacts in Community Groups, Local Authorities, Public Services, Social Services and Police Authorities.
- To have a thorough knowledge of all aspects of the game of bowls.
- To have experience of working with Children and Vulnerable Adults.
- To have organisational skills and be able to plan in a structured manner.
- To have considerable experience of playing the game at local level is normally expected.
- To have a clear understanding of coaching and refereeing techniques.
- To be in possession of a current driving licence is desirable.
- To have a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) Certificate appropriate for the role.
- To have undertaken appropriate training for Children and Adults.
- To be aware of the BCGBA Policy for all children and vulnerable adults participating in crown green bowling and to safeguard their welfare.
- To ensure all officers of SCGBA have an awareness of the safeguarding policies and how to raise any concerns they might have.
- The Safeguarding Officer to attend and ensure all coaches attends a CPSU / NGB recognised face to face ‘Safeguarding Awareness Workshop’ and refresher training to be taken every 3 years (refresher training may be online)
- To provide evidence of communication of safeguarding information to all members groups.
- To keep detailed & secure records of all club Safeguarding Officer(s) and qualifications, safeguarding training records and DBS checks available through the Association or with BCGBA.
ROLE CONTENT:
- To attend Executive Committee meetings to report generally on safeguarding issues.
- To attend meetings called by the National Governing Body Safeguarding Officer, to relate to other County Safeguarding Officers, and to report on specific current national issues to the SCGBA Management Committee.
- To support Clubs in adopting & promotion of the NGB & SCGBA Safeguarding Policies, Codes of Conduct & Procedures.
- To ensure all incidents and concerns are dealt with in accordance with policy guidelines
- To ensure that all allegations of abuse are taken seriously & maintenance of confidentiality.
- To respond to all allegations in a swift and appropriate manner.
- To ensure that the Association’s Policy on Child and Vulnerable Persons Protection Policies is reviewed annually.
- To ensure the safety and protection of all vulnerable persons involved in controlled events through adherence to the SCGBA Child and Vulnerable Adults protection guidelines.
- To encourage all Officers, Selectors and Team Managers to make informed and confident responses to specific child protection issues.
- To ensure that the needs of disabled children and adults, who may be particularly vulnerable, are considered.
- To encourage all Member Clubs to identify a Club Safeguarding Officers and ensure relevant training courses are identified to act on safeguarding issues within their clubs, and be the first point of contact .
- To give advice and guidance to Club Safeguarding Officers on emerging issues.

Expected Hours to work
The main area of the job is processing all the DBS applications during the year its more favourable that they are completed before the season starts. As it’s a three year process its around 12 hours work to complete the applications either via Zoom or face to face each year then process them to BCGBA and then log all details as they come back to the applicants and verify they pass etc which takes considerably more time.
The amount of other work that happens during the year can be varying from answering queries to any issues that might crop up during the season at clubs. Reports to all Executive meetings and AGM are expected to happen each year for all meetings.
All information that concerns safeguarding must be forwarded to all leagues and clubs where necessary.
Remuneration is in the region of £1331 gross per annum currently.
