OThe Tanners Shropshire League won the Veteran Inter League for the third time in the competition’s history by defeating the hosts, Market Drayton, by 19 in the final held at Adderley. The team had a good start winning the first four games with Keith Owen’s 21-7 helping them to a 22 chalk advantage. Ian Foster prompted a Market Drayton fightback as they took three of the last four games but with Geoff Davies winning 21-12 for the title.
Earlier in the day the Tanners team had met the Market Drayton side in the group stage, beating them by 5 at Hodnet with captain Dave Mansell winning 21-10. Next up were Mid Shropshire and again this was a very close match with the final margin being just four chalks. There were several very close games but League Vice Chairman, Graeme Wornell, came up with a crucial 21-11 card. The final game in the group stage was against North Shropshire Ladies and this time it was a more comfortable affair as the Tanners team won by 49 chalks, Dave Beer 21-9.
It was then off to Adderley were they had a long wait as the other group played at the Joules green in Market Drayton between Drayton Seniors, Shropshire Ladies, Wem and Whitchurch finished a lot later.
In the semi final they came up against a very persistent Shropshire Ladies team and there were some good battling performances when well down. Dave Beer and Phil Whatmough both won 21-11 in the first four to give the Tanners side a four chalk lead. The Tanners then won the last four but they were all tight games, three finishing 21-19 and the other 21-17 to book a place in the final by 14 chalks,
